Monte Cassiono
Monte Cassiono is a monastery on top of a of hill about two hours drive south of Rome. It was was set up by St Benedict in the sixth century and is still a functioning monastery today. It has had a turbulent history and most recently it was destroyed in WW2 by the allied forces as it was thought to be a strategic position for the Nazis when they controlled Italy. It was rebuilt to its original form and can be visited now.
