Florence-Siena - Day 3

adunsy

We decided to visit Sienna on our way back to Rome as it is not on the main train line and would take a long time to get to if we did it on a single trip.

The Sienna Cathedral.

From the front.

Looking down onto the altar while on the loft tour.

The side of the nave.

Looking towards the altar.

The floor, depictions of battles to secure the city from centuries ago.

The old sacristy.

And the ceiling.

Below the Cathedral is the baptistery

Across town is the Dominican Church where the city's most famous St relic is housed. St Catherine of Siena. In front of the church is the convent where St Catherine lived.

The convent.

The oratory in the convent.

Painting in the oratory.

Just up the road was the Dominican Church.

Fairly plain on the inside.

The main altar.

In one of the side altars is the head of St Catherine. Originally in Rome attached to the rest of the body, a zealous Sr. removed the head and brought it back to Sienna.

That concluded the trip to Florence and Sienna back to Rome for now.
